This post describes how to configure Ubuntu 13.04 for a Dell U2713H monitor with a 2560x1440 resolution. It also works for Ubuntu 13.10.
Open a terminal and execute.
cvt 2560 1440 60
The resulting output on the console is needed to create a new monitor resolution setting and might look like the following.
sven@c:~$ cvt 2560 1440 60 # 2560x1440 59.96 Hz (CVT 3.69M9) hsync: 89.52 kHz; pclk: 312.25 MHz Modeline "2560x1440_60.00" 312.25 2560 2752 3024 3488 1440 1443 1448 1493 -hsync +vsync
Create a new file /usr/share/dell-u2713h.sh with the following content.
xrandr --newmode 2560x1440 312.25 2560 2752 3024 3488 1440 1443 1448 1493 -hsync +vsync xrandr --addmode HDMI2 2560x1440
Make the file executable.
sudo chmod +x /usr/share/dell-u2713h.sh
The last step is to add the following line to the end of the file /etc/lightdm/lightdm.conf
session-setup-script=/usr/share/dell-u2713h.sh
